A Blue Horizon

Makapu’u Point Lighthouse with its red roof is set in a magical location with the cobalt blue water and black lava cast in the early morning red hues of sunrise.

Makapu’u Point Lighthouse is located at the easternmost point on the island of O’ahu and named after a supernatural being, Makapu'u, which means "bulging eye,'' referring to her eight bright eyes. Makapu`u Point rises 647 feet above sea level and at 395 feet the lighthouse was constructed. A hyperradiant lens comprised of 1,188 glass prisms was installed and the only one of its kind ever used in a U.S. lighthouse. The Makapu'u lens was exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition prior to being shipped to Hawai’i. The lighthouse began operation on October 1, 1909.
